Shipping Frequently Asked Questions

As a freight forwarder, we are frequently asked shipping questions. Here you will find the answer to the most frequently requested shipping questions.

How are shipping rates calculated?

To provide shipping rates, we need to know various details. These include;

  • Who the shipper is
  • Customer details
  • Information about the goods
  • The volumes you wish to ship

We then provide shipping lines with this information. At this point, we collate the details and offer the best rates possible.

What happens when my container arrives at the port?

When a container arrives at the port, it will either be released or examined by customs. Containers will only be issued if all the charges have been paid.

If a container is selected for an exam, it will be released once the review is successful. If the exam is not successful, customs will provide details of why not. Afterwards, we will liaise with them to identify and correct the issues found.

It is also important to note that if Customs do examine the cargo, there are associated charges. These charges vary depending on the type of exam.

Are there different types of containers?

There are different containers for different types of cargo. These typically are:

  • Standard Containers
    • These are either 20, 40 or 45 foot in length and there is no temperature control.
  • Refrigerated or Reefer Containers
    • These are either 20 or 40 foot and are temperature controlled
  • High Cube Containers
    • These are either a standard or reefer container but generally taller.
  • Reefer with Temperature Controlled atmosphere
    • These are temperature controlled as well as managing the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide
  • Specialist or Bulk Containers
    • Flatracks, Platforms, Bulk or Tank, are also available.

What are the different types of Vessels?

There are different types of vessels including:

  • A standard container vessel carries containers of various sizes.
  • An under-deck vessel carries palletised goods in a large, dedicated hold where it is kept at a set temperature and humidity.
  • A mixed vessel ship has both under deck storage and containers. It is usually smaller than a standard container ship.

I want to ship my goods, but I cannot fill a container, what are my options?

General purpose containers are available in a range of sizes. However, we do offer flexible solutions if you cannot fill an entire container. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Do I need customs clearance to buy and sell overseas?

The majority of goods entering a new country will require some clearance. However, we have years of experience in dealing with customs clearance, so we are here to help. We can offer you advice and help with any documentation required as well as payments necessary.

Why are shipping rates so volatile?

Shipping rates can vary for a variety of reasons, and fluctuating rates are often due to market demands. The less demand for shipping there is then the higher the rates are at that time.

Also, fuel is also a large factor. The fluctuating price of oil will affect shipping rates, terminal costs and the general economic climate.
